Additionally, the small scale farmers preferred to sell their coffee beans through cooperatives. Coffee grower’s cooperative was formed in the year 1946. The main reason for coming up with this cooperative was to help address the issues of suffering coffee growers. Missionaries introduced the Arabica coffee variety.

It is also good to know that farmers from this country have formed a farmers union called MZUZU. The main function of the organization is to import stores online. The shareholders in this organization are from the five coffee producing regions in Malawi.

Estate subsections

Common methods of processing coffee in Malawi

Naturally processed

This method has been gaining popularity with many farmers. It is good to know that only floating cherries are removed before drying. Coffee produced using this method is usually sweet and smooth.

Washed

Most of the coffee being sold in the international market is produced through the washing method. Typically, coffee beans are put into wetting mills and later forced out using machines and water.
