You might have heard that coffee is one of the most important aspects of the Ivory Coast economy. Actually, coffee is the second major export from this country. From the 1970s to the eighties, Ivory Coast was the largest coffee producer in Africa. This country has faced a lot of stiff competition especially from Brazil, Ethiopia and Vietnam. As for now, Ivory Coast is ranked number 19th coffee producer in the world. These rankings were done by a reliable France source.

Coffee production in Indonesia increased rapidly after the country gained its independence. In the 1960s, this country was ranked third in the world. Unlike other African countries, Ivory Coast has achieved a lot in agricultural research. It is in this country where a special bean called presidential coffee was discovered. The Ivory Coast people have not yet recognized the worth of Arabica coffee variety. This type of coffee is grown in the western part of the country. It does well in regions of high altitudes.

Coffee varieties grown in Ivory Coast

Robusta

It is important to note that Ivory Coast is the single largest producer of Robusta coffee beans in the world. Although Robusta coffee variety has been referred to as cheap and of low quality, it still has demand in the international market. Actually, Robusta has a share of more than 30% in the world market.

In most cases, processors in Ivory Coast prefer blending Robusta coffee beans with Arabica. The main aim of doing this is to reduce the cost while at the same time enhancing the flavor of the coffee. The best thing about the Robusta coffee variety is that it boasts of high resistivity to leaf rust.

Arabusta

It is the highest end hybrid coffee variety. This coffee is bred from Robusta and Arabica. The unique coffee variety was developed in Ivory Coast in the 1960s. It was developed immediately after the country gained independence. The hybrid coffee variety was supposed to be an alternative to the Robusta crops. By then, the Robusta coffee was characterized by a bitter strong flavor. The reason behind this is the high levels of caffeine.

These coffee beans were considered the perfect option simply because the country did not have the high altitudes required by the Arabica beans. Unfortunately, this coffee variety has low productivity when compared to the Robusta variety. Although coffee brings a lot of capital to the country, there are no major policies that have been adopted to promote this variety.

Final Thoughts

The government has put much effort into improving on the total coffee productions in the country. However, coffee production has continued to decline as a result of civil wars and lack of resources.
