Guatemala boasts of one of the top quality coffee beans in the world. In coffee production and exporting, this country has been ranked 5th for a long time. It was overtaken by Honduras in 2011. The growing of coffee in Guatemala was started in 1860. Remember that it was in 1860 when the natural dye was compressed by other synthetic products. This was the country’s major economic symbol. Therefore, the government saw the need to look for another option that could easily propel their economy.

Farmers received a lot of government encouragement. In turn, this made the country a major coffee exporter. As for now, Guatemala has more than 100,000 coffee producers.

Coffee production in Guatemala

In the last few years, we have witnessed many people moving to urban areas from their rural homes to seek education. Most of them are in search of green pastures. It is the high population in the cities that has made people move to rural areas. This has led to the occupation of land that was once used in coffee farming in the Antigua regions.

More than half of the country’s total production is exported to the United States of America. However, this country has faced numerous problems among them the notorious leaf rust. Leaf rush has affected the yield and the quality of coffee produced in the country. The largest percent of coffee in Guatemala is of high quality. This has made it to establish a good name in the world coffee market.

The largest population in Guatemala lives in extreme poverty. This means that they do not share the wealth that is realized from the country’s top most export. As a result, most people in this country end up working in coffee plantations especially during the harvesting period.

Coffee varieties grown in Guatemala

The Arabica is the most common coffee variety that is grown in the country. This coffee has a unique taste and flavor. At times, the cherries can be sold off as cascara with the main aim of improving the sales of farmers. You might be aware that cascara is rapidly growing in the market. Additionally, you will find geisha coffee varieties in this region. Besides being a sugary coffee variety, it has a floral aroma. This makes this coffee stand out among all coffee types.

Processing methods in Guatemala

This country is known for high humid conditions. It also experiences a high amount of rainfall every year. The most used processing method in this country is the washing method. Remember that natural drying cannot be used with such humidity levels. The wet processing methods not only appeals to the consumers but also the coffee farmers.

Final Thoughts

Pour over method and cold brew are the most used coffee brewing methods in Guatemala. You can also use the French press method.
