Away from that, Cameroon is ranked 31st coffee producing nation in the world. This ranking is according to statistics that were released in 2014 by a reputable source. Traditionally, the Cameroon people used to grow low grade Robusta coffee in large quantities. The organic and high quality Arabica coffee was not introduced until 1990.

Organic Arabica coffee was brought into the country through the efforts of the Cameroon coffee corporations. The main aim of introducing this type of coffee was to maximize the returns of what the farmers were getting. It is also important to note that Arabica coffee is grown in almost all provinces. You can find this coffee in the eastern, south eastern and west province of this country.

The most notable thing about Cameroon coffee is its high caffeine content. Coffee thrives well in Cameroon due to favorable climatic conditions that include ample rainfall and dark rich volcanic soils. The only drawback facing coffee production in Cameroon is that the government is yet to introduce advanced coffee processing techniques. That is the main reason why you find them exporting coffee partially processed.

Types of Coffee grown in Cameroon

Normally, Arabica consists of two main species that include java and typical. Of the two coffee varieties, java is the most popular with coffee lavas. This type of coffee can survive numerous diseases and pests in coffee plantations. The largest amount of coffee produced in Cameroon is exported to other countries.

Coffee grown in the coffee growing region of Bayo has had significant resistance to common diseases. It is also popular for its good quality and high caffeine content. In this region, you will find nutritious soils and high sufficient rainfall. All these factors ensure the harvesting of high quantities of coffee.

Conditions for coffee growing

The eastern and western regions of Cameroon receive high amounts of rainfall every year. This favors Arabica coffee production greatly. On the other hand, the coastal region experience high conventional rainfall that favors the Robusta variety.

Elements of Cameroon coffee

There are various elements that have been associated with Cameroon coffee. Here are some of these elements that you will notice when you consider purchasing this coffee.

  • Chocolate taste.
  • Good quality.
  • Full body flavor.
  • Pleasant aroma.

Final Thoughts

It is good to keep in mind that only about five percent of Cameroon coffee is processed in the country. The highest percentage of coffee is exported and sold at a lower price. Recently, we have witnessed the Cameroon government putting much effort into educating and supporting coffee farmers.
