The general procedure of coffee awarding

Firstly, roasters are invited for coffee competitions. Although not all the time, they usually pay a fee in order to enter the competition. Coffee in the competitions is sent in coded packages. This prevents the judges from knowing the origin of the individual coffee participating in the competition. Additionally, all the participating coffee is prepared using particular recipes. From there, they are passed to the judges for tasting. It is the role of the judges to give scores for each coffee. The specific method of brewing for these coffees may be by French Press or Espresso. After all the scores have been compiled, the winner of the competition is determined.

The number one coffee is awarded a gold medal. You will notice that at times no coffee will reach the highest scores. It all depends on how the competition is organized. Kindly remember that a gold medal does not mean that it is the best coffee. These awards can be categorized into multiple levels for instance national, regional level and extra. The most popular coffee competitions are held in the United States of America and Australia. Competitions organized in these countries are considered as international.
